    What does a Social Worker do?

    A hospital Social Worker helps patients and their families cope with the many problems that accompany illness or inhibit recovery and rehabilitation, such as economic need, disability, and lack of resources after discharge from hospital. They also collect and analyse patient information to help other health professionals understand the social, emotional, and environmental factors underlying a patient’s condition, or affecting their recovery.  In hospitals, Social Workers often coordinate services for home care and equipment following discharge, or for referral to rehabilitation and long-term care facilities.

    A hospital Social Worker has the opportunity to specialize in certain areas including child and adolescent care, mental health, substance abuse and learning disabilities.

  1. Occupational Therapist

    What does an Occupational Therapist do?

    An Occupational Therapist help patients who are mentally, emotionally or physically disabled adjust to handicaps and regain abilities to perform daily living and self-care skills.

    Occupational Therapists design therapy programs and work closely with patients to observe them, help them and monitor their progress.  They work as part of an interdisciplinary team and play a vital role in establishing and maintaining working relationships with other BHB programs and community services.

    What does a Pharmacy Technician do?

A Pharmacy Technician has supervised responsibility for performing technical and clerical tasks. These include processing orders, manufacturing, repackaging, collecting/delivering supplies, and performing the tasks of other support staff when the need arises. Pharmacy Technicians interact with nurses, doctors and other health professionals on a regular basis ensuring patients receive the most appropriate treatments in the most effective way.

  2. Pharmacist

    What does a Pharmacist do?

    The pharmacy’s main role is to prepare and dispense drugs and medicines. With medicine becoming increasingly more complex as does the role performed by the pharmacy. A Pharmacist is responsible for maintaining the established departmental policies, procedures and objectives to ensure the pharmacy fulfils its role. Hospital Pharmacists can be assigned to work in the Outpatient Pharmacy, In-Patient Pharmacy or Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute Pharmacy. All Pharmacists participate in shift rotation, including weekends, public holidays and on-call. Pharmacists participate in a variety of continuing education sessions and are a part of the Multidisciplinary team for patient care.     What does a Registered Nurse do?

    The focus of attention for a Registered Nurse is the patient. RN’s promote health, prevent disease, and help patients and families cope with illness.   5. Sterile Processing Technician

    What does a Sterile Processing Technician do?

    A Sterile Processing Technician works under the director of the Sterile Processing Coordinator. The technician is responsible for the decontaminating, preparing, and processing of surgical instrumentation, treatment trays and equipment used for patient care.

    What qualifications and experience does the hospital require?

    What does a Physician do?

    A Physician diagnoses illnesses and prescribes and administers treatment for people suffering from injury or disease. Physicians examine patients, obtain medical histories, and order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests. Working hours for Physicians can be long and irregular especially during their training period (residency). During the residency period a Physician receives training in a chosen specialty such as –

    What does a Laboratory Technologist do?

    A Laboratory Technologist works under supervision providing high quality medical laboratory testing for the patient to aid in the diagnosis of wellness and of disease. Laboratory Technologists are responsible for all bench work assigned by senior laboratory staff. Technologists can work in one of the following fields – Chemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, Cytology or Histology.

    A Mortuary Technician assists the Pathologist in performing autopsies. It is the responsibility of the technician to ensure that all equipment is clean and orderly. The technician oversees the admission to and release of bodies in the Mortuary.

  1. Health Records Analyst

    What does a Health Records Analyst do?

    A Health Records Analyst oversees computer programming regarding medical records. Assists with development of new computer programs. Supervises abstraction and coding of discharge data for on-line input. Advises medical staff and others regarding audit process. Prepares statistical reports.

    • Graduate of an accredited school for Medical Record Technicians, or successful completion of the HRT program and exam conducted by CCHRA/CHA.

    What does a Health Sciences Librarian do?

    A Health Sciences Librarian collects and organizes medical information and helps practitioners find the information they need for patient care, education, research and administration. Selects and acquires books, journals and other library materials. Establishes and manages electronic and digital database information systems. Information is organized into collections and cataloged for access and to provide reference assistance to patrons. Coordinates and controls budgets and supervises the Library Assistant.

  4. Medical Transcriptionist

    What does a Medical Transcriptionist do?

    What does an Accountant do?

    An Accountant is responsible for the input, computation and preparation of the internal hospital budgets, compilation and distribution of monthly budget variance reporting packages, collection, analysis and filing of budget variance returns. Assists department heads with preparation of annual budgets and provide ongoing assistance with investigation and analysis of budget variances.

    What does a Training Officer do?
