They donate over 40,000 hours of service annually, and have contributed millions of dollars in support of the hospitals since their inception in 1953. The most recognisable faces of HAB are the ‘Pink Ladies and Men’ (adult volunteers) and candy stripers (students) you will see around the hospital, from the front information desk and Pink Café to the wards.

Areas where HAB volunteers make a difference:

Candy Stripers

Candy Stripers

Candy stripers are HAB student volunteers. Candy striping is a wonderful opportunity to develop character and maturity. Volunteers gain experience through teamwork and are given the chance to take on important responsibilities. Above all, they are learning to make a difference in their community by undertaking rewarding and satisfying work.

Young people enter the programme at the age of 14 and are eligible to participate until the age of 18. We suggest an application be submitted to our office when the young person turns 10 as there is a long waiting list. Interviews are held once a year in the spring. Applicants who are selected for the programme attend an orientation in June.

Stripers must volunteer at least one month over the summer (either July or August), working three shifts a week. Stripers must also work during the winter and spring holiday breaks. Duties include volunteering on the wards, delivering flowers and baby bags, and assisting in various areas throughout the hospital, at the Pink Café and at the Barn.

Stripers are expected to arrive on time and behave in a responsible manner. They must be neatly dressed, with tidy hair. Most importantly, all volunteers must sign a confidentiality agreement. Any breach of confidentiality will result in immediate dismissal from the programme.
