Redevelopment Project | Bermuda Hospitals Board

The KEMH Redevelopment Project has two related parts: renovation of current facilities and the construction of a new acute care building.

Renovation

KEMH renovations will extend the existing facility’s life to 2029 and serve to maintain and improve patient services.  The existing facility will remain in operation 24/7 while the structure is upgraded.

New Construction

A new facility to house various acute care services was constructed over several years on the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) site. The new Acute Care Wing opened on 14 September 2014 and is linked to the existing facility. Services include 90 single-patient rooms, a new Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, ambulatory care services including oncology, same-day surgery and dialysis, and a central utility plant.

Beyond Five Years

BHB has approval for the first five-year phase of the project, but additional projects at the KEMH site could develop in the next 20-plus years, including:

  • Continuously reviewing Bermuda’s health care needs and assessing whether it justifies future development of the KEMH site
  • Managing the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute as a separate development project
