Our focus at BHB’s DREAM Centre is to teach self-management skills to people who have been diagnosed with asthma or COPD to help them maintain control using the least amount of medication.

The Dr Beresford Swan Dialysis Unit is a specialised provider of services to patients with kidney disease, including patients suffering from chronic kidney failure.
For patients with kidney failure, haemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment. Haemodialysis removes impurities from the blood by using a dialyser, also known as an artificial kidney. We never reuse dialysers. A dedicated clinical dietitian is assigned to work with those who receive dialysis.
The Dialysis team also treats patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
Home Health Care Services – such as medication administration and management, ulcer and wound care, stroke rehabilitation, ostomy care and amputee care – may be provided by skilled nurses to KEMH inpatients who are:
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) treats patients in a pressurised chamber where their entire body is exposed to 100% oxygen. This super-oxygenates the bloodstream to promote the growth of new small blood cells and support tissue re-growth.
HBOT is a life-saving treatment for medical emergencies such as carbon monoxide poisoning and gas gangrene, and is adjunctive therapy in the treatment of many types of non-healing wounds. HBOT was originally developed to treat underwater divers suffering from “the bends” (decompression sickness).
The Lymphedema Clinic addresses the needs of patients who have swelling in a body part (usually a limb) because of an accumulation of lymph fluid just under the skin. There is no cure for this chronic condition, which can be congenital, or caused by radiation damage or the removal of lymph nodes during breast cancer and certain other surgeries.
Physiotherapy can help relieve symptoms through manual lymph drainage and compression. Phase I treatment typically involves one hour of therapy per day for three to six weeks. Patients are also fitted with compression sleeves or stockings, which they should continue to wear on an ongoing basis.

Medical social workers (MSWs) provide supportive, confidential counselling to patients and their families to help them cope with the many problems that can accompany illness and disability. They identify needs and connect clients to community resources that may be able to help with day care and financial or emotional problems.
Medical social workers often coordinate arrangements for home care and equipment needed after discharge. When patients need to go abroad, MSWs arrange for air evacuations and help relatives make plans for accommodations.
The BHB Oncology Department is a restful, naturally sunlit area where patients receive chemotherapy treatments and meet with their oncology specialist and nurses. Our priority is your comfort and your care. Our staff members are highly trained and experienced.
The Orthopaedic (Fracture) Clinic provides exemplary patient care, playing an important role in providing you with comprehensive care for fractures and trauma of the musculoskeletal system. Patients are usually referred to the fracture clinic from the Emergency Department and occasionally by their physician.
Led by orthopaedic surgeons, the multidisciplinary healthcare team ensures that you have the right treatment for your injury. In addition to fractures, we also care for patients with soft tissue injuries such as damage to tendons and ligaments, and orthopaedic post-operative follow-up visits. Almost all patients are seen within a week of their injury. If you have an injury that needs to be treated by a particular specialist, you may be asked to attend on a specific day.

Registered clinical dietitians are involved in programmes throughout the hospitals. They provide nutrition screening, assessment, intervention and counselling for both outpatients and inpatients, helping patients adapt to diets appropriate to their individual and medical needs.

BHB’s urology service offers men and women specialist care and treatments. We are able to diagnose and treat a wide range of urological conditions on-island, and work with overseas partners when more highly specialist treatments or surgeries are required.
From kidney stones to prostate health and urinary disorders, we will work with you on treatment plans tailored to your needs. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care to help you achieve optimal urological health in a comfortable, supportive environment. Joseph Yammine MD FACC

Dr Joseph Yammine joined the Bermuda Hospitals Board as a Consultant Cardiologist in 2014. He is tasked with providing outpatient consultations to people with heart diseases, and delivering specialised cardiac care for hospitalised and emergency patients. He received his post graduate training at Brigham and Women's hospital, Brown University and State University of New York. Before joining BHB, Dr Yammine was in academic clinical practice as a member of the Brigham and Women's Cardiovascular Associates at Care New England in Rhode Island. Additionally, he was a full-time clinical faculty with the rank of Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He holds six American board certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Echocardiography, Cardiac Computed Tomography and Nuclear Cardiology.
