Bermuda Hospitals Board Announces Scholarship Winners

Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) is today celebrating this year’s scholarship winners at an Awards Ceremony at Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI). Awards worth a total of $250,000 (paid over time periods from one to four years) are being presented to thirteen students pursuing careers in healthcare. The awards are being presented by the Minister for Health, Hon. Michael Scott JP MP, the Minister for Education, Hon. Randolph Horton JP MP, BHB’s Chairman, Herman Tucker and Chief Executive Officer, David Hill.

Five scholarships are being awarded to nursing students, one to a Medical student and seven to students seeking degrees in allied health fields, such as speech pathology, psychology, physiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and social work. The scholarship winners have all demonstrated a strong commitment to service in the community and the hospitals, as well as maintaining a strong academic performance.

In addition to announcing scholarship winners, this year’s ceremony will honour 22 employees who have recently graduated with degrees or certifications in healthcare.

Bradlyn DeShields, Acting Director of Human Resources comments: “I would like to congratulate the BHB scholarship winners and pay tribute to all students who applied. Human Resources recognize the value of these young people to Bermuda as we work hard to recruit against the global shortage of medical professionals. I would also like to congratulate BHB staff who have successfully completed their studies over the last twelve months. ”

David Hill, CEO, says: “We are proud to support our future healthcare professionals as they take the next step towards exciting and rewarding professions. I wish them the very best in their studies. I would also like to congratulate our staff who have shown great determination in gaining professional qualifications throughout the year. These are significant qualifications, including Diplomas, Associate Degrees, Bachelors Degrees, Masters and various Certifications. I know that staff worked exceedingly hard around their working day to achieve them. Thank you for your ongoing commitment and dedication to improving patient care.”

Herman Tucker, Chairman adds: “We set aside a sizeable portion of money for the scholarship programme as the importance of attracting Bermudians into healthcare is critical to the long term wellbeing of the hospitals and its ability to deliver sustained excellent quality care in the years to come. I congratulate the students and look forward to the successful completion of their studies. Equally, investing in our staff is as important as investing in our infrastructure, as the healthcare environment constantly evolves, develops and challenges us. BHB educational grants for staff hopefully make studying more affordable for our staff, but I am proud of their personal dedication to development and improvement, which has a direct and positive impact in the hospitals.”
