Advisory for Visitors to KEMH: Elevator Project to Start 29 October 2012

Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) today advises visitors that a project to replace four elevators at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital will commence on Monday 29 October 2012. Patients and visitors will be impacted as the project will temporarily reduce the number of available elevators.

The elevators were originally installed in 1972 and each has done about 9 million lifts. The project to replace the elevators is being undertaken as part of the required maintenance of the existing KEMH facility, to ensure safety, reliability and extend the facility’s useful life for the next 20 to 30 years. The new elevators will be lighter, faster and more efficient.

The two Eastern elevators (that are next to Diagnostic Imaging on the ground floor) will be replaced first, followed by the two Western elevators (next to The Pink Café on the ground floor). The entire project will take about 36 weeks to complete, with each of pair of elevators taking approximately 18 weeks.

A full tendering process was undertaken for the contract, which was awarded to Otis Elevators. The entire project will cost $1.2 million.

Scott Pearman, Chief Operating Officer (KEMH) comments: “This is a vital project as our lifts must be safe and reliable. Replacement of the KEMH elevators is part of our commitment to refurbishing the KEMH infrastructure. Our visitors and patients are not always able to take the stairs, and for inpatients being moved in beds and wheelchairs for diagnostic services or surgeries we need our lifts to be in good working order. We apologise for the temporary inconvenience of a reduced elevator service for all those who need them and thank the community and staff for their understanding while the project is completed.”
