Nurses’ Week 2005 Highlights Profession’s Diversity

The diverse work of Bermuda’s 800+ nurses is the focus of this year’s Nurses’ Week, celebrated May 9-15, 2005. The theme for this year is ‘Nurses: Many Roles, One Profession’* . Nurses comprise the largest body of healthcare professionals at the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB). Their commitment, dedication and hard work will be celebrated in a series of week-long events organized by the Bermuda Nursing Association (BNA) and BHB.

“This week is a wonderful opportunity to thank our nurses for their enormous contribution to healthcare, and also to educate the community about the varied opportunities in this challenging and rewarding field,” said Joan Dillas-Wright, Chief Executive Officer of the Bermuda Hospitals Board, and also a nurse. “The future of nursing is only going to continue to grow, so it’s important that we educate the public about the exciting opportunities that exist.”

Nurses at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) and St. Brendan’s Hospital (SBH) work in a wide variety of areas including administration, asthma care, diabetes, educational services, hyperbaric and wound management, infection control, intensive care, information systems, maternity, mental health, oncology, paediatrics, quality and risk, rehabilitation services and substance abuse.

Events this week include an opening ceremony at City Hall, chapel and church services, an amazing race tailored to nurses, games’ night, retired nurses’ tea, family fun day and a luncheon to name the Nurse of the Year at the end of the week.

“Nurses play a key role in our community, whether it’s in a hospital, community, or corporate setting,” said Lisa Symonds, President of the Bermuda Nurses’ Association. “We’re looking forward to next week’s events to acknowledge and celebrate all of the work they do.”

The BHB is actively recruiting nurses. Every year, the hospitals invest $250,000 in Bermudian students pursuing education and training in healthcare fields. Bermudians who wish to train to become a nurse may now complete their first two years of education at the Bermuda College and then transfer to Hampton University.
