Bermuda Hospitals Board and Bermuda College Launch New Summer Programme for Young Teens

Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) and Bermuda College are pleased to announce a new summer camp programme for young people between the ages of 10 to 14. CampMed is designed to expose young teens to career options in healthcare in a relaxed and fun environment.

The programme will include hands on activities, facilitated by BHB counsellors and healthcare professionals. The programme will include tours of KEMH and MWI, along with activities focusing on diversity, awareness and leadership training.

“We’ve had a very active student programme at the hospital for years,” explains Lynae Wales, Student-Volunteer Services Coordinator for BHB. “Students work throughout both hospitals in a variety of departments. However, these programmes have always been limited to students who are 14-years of age and older. We are thrilled to now offer young teens a chance to learn about healthcare through our new CampMed summer programme.”

Bermuda College President, Dr. Duranda Greene said, “The College has always worked closely with BHB promoting nursing education and other career paths in healthcare. We are very happy to support this new programme, giving younger students a chance to learn about positions at the hospital.”

“BHB employs people in over 200 different positions,” add Ms. Wales. “Staff work in areas as diverse as pathology, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, dietary, finance, information technology, maintenance, nursing, rehabilitation services and infection control. We think CampMed will give pre-teens a unique and fun summer experience, while exposing them to exciting careers in healthcare.”

Registration will take place between May 11 and May 15 from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the Human Resources Department, King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (located at Montrose Cottage, across from the Emergency Room entrance). CampMed will run weekdays from July 6 through August 7, 2009 from 8:00am to 5:00pm at the Bermuda College. There is a $50 registration fee. The camp costs $80 a week. Space is limited and parents are encouraged to register early. For further information, call 239-2134.
