Child and Adolescent Services Hosts Open House

Child and Adolescent Services (CAS) invites members of the public to attend an Open House for its newly renovated facility at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI) on Friday, June 29 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

CAS, one of several mental health programmes under the remit of MWI, was established in 1991 in response to mental health needs of young people in Bermuda. Several years ago, staff recognized that services needed to be expanded and a new, purpose-built facility was designed to meet the demand.

Officially opened this month, CAS now offers a day programme that treats up to ten students at a time, staffed by trained educators. In addition, a four-bed inpatient unit offers treatment to young people who need in-hospital care.

The 5,000 square foot property includes a private, landscaped area with a basketball court. There are also two courtyards, enclosed with planted terraces, for play equipment. The interior design includes child-friendly furniture and promotes a non-institutional environment.

Sharon Apopa, Programme Manager for CAS, said, “Our new facility offers comprehensive services for young people in a state-of-the-art, first class property. We invite members of the public to attend our Open House, take a tour, ask questions and see for themselves what we have to offer.”

CAS has doubled the size of their staff and the new 19-member team includes a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, clinical assistant, registered nurse and clinical coordinator, as well as family, occupational, experiential and educational therapists.

“Our staff members are delighted to be working in this pleasant and professional environment,” concludes Mrs. Apopa. “CAS serves the mental health needs of young people in the community and our team is proud to offer quality care in such a fine facility.”
