Single Largest Donor Funds Improvements at Hospitals

The Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda (HAB) has donated nearly $500,000 to the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) in the past seven weeks. At the end of December, funds for the purchase of new ultrasound equipment in the emergency department and a van for the dialysis unit were provided. This week, funds were donated to purchase equipment at both King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) and Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI).

The HAB is the single largest donor for BHB, raising funds through their three retail businesses: the Pink Café, the Gift Shop and the Barn. In addition, HAB members make an invaluable contribution to patient care by volunteering at both hospitals.

David Hill, CEO for BHB said, “We are extremely grateful to the volunteers and board members of the HAB, not only for their financial support of healthcare in Bermuda, but also for the many hours of service they provide every year. Their contribution impacts positively on quality patient care and is valued and appreciated by staff, clients and the community.”

Josephine Wright, President of the HAB said, “It is a pleasure for our members to work on behalf of patients and staff at the hospitals. Our priority is contributing, both financially and through service, to healthcare in Bermuda.”

Recent donations will provide significant improvements at KEMH and MWI. Items purchased include:
· Stretchers for MWI
· Ultrasound equipment for the dialysis unit
· Leica Autostainer for the pathology department
· Work station for the sterile processing department
· Continuous passive motion machines for the surgical programme
· Epidural pumps for the control and management of pain medications

Members of the public are encouraged to join the HAB and volunteer at the hospitals. Please contact 236-2488 for further information.
