Mind Frame Art Exhibit Opens at City Hall

Bermuda Hospitals Board is partnering with the Bermuda Society of the Arts to present Mind Frame, an exhibition of artwork created by clients who attend the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI). The exhibit will open on Friday, October 12 at City Hall.

Over 80 pieces of art, submitted by approximately 30 artists, will be displayed through October 31st. Submissions range from paintings, drawings, sketches, stenciling, word expression and poetry to photography and collage.

Occupational Therapists (OTs) at MWI use art in their work with clients as a way to help them manage stress and other symptoms.

“We believe the art-making process is inherently healing,” said Teresa Law, Professional Practice Leader for OT at MWI. “Engaging in art activities improves self-esteem, mood and motivation and allows for unique thinking, decision-making and a sense of empowerment. It also helps clients explore and understand feelings. It is relaxing and can be a way of distracting the mind.”

Studies have explored the relation between artistic ability and mental illness. “While none have been conclusive,” said Ms. Law, “many experts believe people who suffer from mental illness are often very creative and able to express their experience artistically.”

Members of the public are encouraged to view the exhibit and attend the Opening, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm on October 12.

“Clients and staff at MWI thank the community for supporting this important event,” said Ms. Law.
