Free Health Screenings Offered to Public for Healthy Heart Month

As part of Healthy Heart Month, nurses from the medical programme at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH), in partnership with the Bermuda Heart Foundation, will offer free health screenings in February in the KEMH lobby.

Screening for blood pressure, blood sugar, Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist measurement will be available without charge in the lobby of the hospital between 10:00am and 2:00pm on Wednesday, February 11 and 25.

“As the number one cause of death for both men and women on our island and around the world, heart disease affects one in two Bermudians,” says Norma Smith, Director of Outpatient Services for Bermuda Hospitals Board. “Specifically, coronary artery disease, a condition that blocks blood vessels, can lead to a heart attack. This is the most preventable form of cardiac disease.”

Research has shown that by controlling risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, weight and physical activity, the chances of developing this debilitating and sometimes fatal condition can be reduced.

“Knowing your risk for heart disease can lessen your odds of a cardiac incident. Understanding these vital statistics can save your life,” adds Mrs. Smith. “Nurses at KEMH are happy to lend their expertise and are grateful to the Bermuda Heart Foundation for supplying equipment and test strips. We invite the public to stop by and learn more about this important health issue.”
