Bermuda Hospitals Board Announces Scholarship Winners

Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) today awards scholarships totaling $140,000 (paid over time periods from one to four years) to four students pursuing degrees in healthcare. One scholarship award is funded jointly with GlaxoSmithKline, who is contributing $30,000.

The awards were presented during a special ceremony held at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital attended by Acting Minister of Health, the Hon. Walter Roban, JP, MP, BHB’s Chairman, Herman Tucker, BHB CEO, David Hill, BHB Deputy CEO, Venetta Symonds, BHB VP of Human Resources, Kerry Garrigan, along with a representative of GlaxoSmithKline.

Two scholarship winners are pursuing Master’s Degrees, one in Occupational Therapy and another in Speech Pathology. One student will pursue a degree in MRI and Nuclear Medicine and the fourth scholarship winner, whose funding is being shared by GlaxoSmithKline, is pursuing a BSC in Nursing at Hampton University.

The scholarship winners have all demonstrated a strong commitment to service in the community and the hospitals, as well as maintaining a solid academic performance.

Ms. Kerry Garrigan, VP of Human Resources comments: “The hospitals are committed to supporting Bermudian students who choose careers in healthcare. We are very proud to provide scholarships to this year’s winners and congratulate them for their important contribution to our community. We are competing in a global market with a shortage of medical professionals and we recognize the value these young people are bringing to Bermuda by becoming healthcare workers.”

David Hill, CEO, says: “These students are the hospitals’ future healthcare professionals and we wish them well as they take the next step towards exciting and rewarding professions. I would also like to pay tribute to GlaxoSmithKline for supporting our students and offering $30,000 to one of our scholarship winners.”

Herman Tucker, Chairman adds: “We set aside a sizeable portion of money for the scholarship programme as the importance of attracting Bermudians into healthcare is critical to the long term wellbeing of the hospitals and its ability to deliver sustained excellent quality care in the years to come. I congratulate the students and look forward to the successful completion of their studies.”

The scholarship winners are:
• Deidre Jones, pursuing an MA in Occupational Therapy
• Mystere Gibbons, pursuing an MA in Speech Pathology
• Natasha Todd, pursuing a degree in MRI & Nuclear Medicine.
• Keenan VanPutten, pursuing a BSC in Nursing at Hampton University and being funded in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline
