BHB mount exhibition

Acute Care Wing : Design – Construction – Complete

The new Acute Care Wing is not a private hospital, it’s for everyone. The state of the art facility opens to the public in September. The construction project was the largest ever in Bermuda and the building took four years to complete. Being a part of the Island’s only hospital, the new wing has included modernisations that not only address the healthcare needs of the community today, but also has left room to expand in the future.

The Bermuda Hospitals Board is mounting an exhibition at the people’s gallery – The Bermuda Society of Arts, which will highlight the design and construction aspects of the new facility.

“We are excited about the positive impact working in this new facility, will bring to healthcare in Bermuda, but alongside the clinical improvements, there are the less obvious advancements in various plant systems and engineering. In this exhibition we highlight these very interesting areas,” said BHB CEO Venetta Symonds. “I encourage everyone to visit this exhibit and attend the mini lunchtime talks.”

The exhibition showcases the new wing from the original design drawings through the construction to the newly completed building that will open to the public in September.
Photos, videos, examples of some of the building materials used, will all be included in the show.

In Studio A there will be a focus on some of the plant equipment in the new building. Steam generators, chillers and the sewage treatment plant, have been designed not only to service the new wing but the entire King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) complex.

In the Edinburgh room, a pictorial history of hospital buildings will give you a chance to see how far the Island has come in providing a place to care for our sick.

A series of four lunchtime lectures are also a feature of the exhibit.

Tuesday 1 July 12:15 – 12:45 Design discussion will centre around the merger of the artistic inspiration with the practical clinical needs. How specifications were arrived at will be included in this.

Thursday 3 July 1:15 – 1:45 Going for Green Discussion on LEED certification – the energy saving aspects of the new building.

Tuesday 8 July 12:15 – 12:45 Future Proofing Discussion on the sophistication of the building design, including the redundancies and allowances for expansion.

Thursday 10 July 1:15 – 1:45 Sewage Treatment Plant Discussion on how this particular plant was chosen, it’s capabilities, it’s construction and explanation on how it works.

Want to see inside the new building? Complete the questionnaire at the exhibit and enter the draw for a tour of the actual facility.

Free to the public, the show opens on Friday 27 June at 5:15 p.m. and runs until July 15. The Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturdays. All are welcome.
