Hospital Director Honoured with Prestigious Award

George Melling, Director of Facilities Management, receives Fellow Certificate

George Melling, Director of Facilities Management for the Bermuda Hospitals Board, was recently honoured by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) with their prestigious Fellow Certificate. As one of less than 200 people in the world with such a designation, Mr. Melling won the title for demonstrating significant individual responsibility, sustained achievement and exceptional professionalism during his career.

Facilities Management is one of the fastest growing professions in the world. Experts in this field are responsible for the buildings and services that support businesses, including hospitals. BIFM is a leader in this area and represents the interests of those who practice facilities management and those who work in organisations supplying related goods or services. Fellowship grade is awarded to a select group of members and is the ultimate accolade. Becoming a Fellow is the most senior category of membership at the BIFM and indicates a high level of achievement in facilities management and an outstanding contribution to the profession.

Venetta Symonds, Acting Chief Executive Officer for BHB said, “We are pleased that Mr. Melling has achieved this honour, which ranks him among the best facilities managers in the world. This designation is a tremendous credit for a career dedicated to excellence.”

Mr. Melling has held his current post at BHB since August 2003. He is responsible for establishing and maintaining a favorable physical environment for patients, staff and visitors at both hospitals. He also advises BHB on strategic development plans. Mr. Melling oversees facilities, built environment, bio-medical engineering services, environmental services and planning & capital developments.

A chartered builder by profession, Mr. Melling has thirty years of experience in the field and holds a range of designations in addition to Fellow of the BIFM, including Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB), Fellow of the Association of Project Management, (FAPM) and Member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI).
