Hospital Appoints Psychiatrists at MWI

Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) is pleased to announce the recent appointments of Dr. Michael Radford and Dr. Chantelle Simmons. Dr. Radford holds the post of Chief of Psychiatry at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI). Dr. Simmons is a Consultant Psychiatrist, working on the Acute West and Turning Point services.

Originally from England, Dr. Radford holds an M.A. degree from Cambridge University, an M. Phil. degree from London University’s Institute of Psychiatry and the MRCPych(UK). He participated in the Masters course in the Philosophy and Ethics of Mental Health at Warwick University in England. As Honorary Senior Lecturer, he taught Masters courses for the Social Studies Department at Birmingham University. He has extensive work experience in mental health services in London and Birmingham, where he was Clinical Director. He played a part in the development of the new National Service Framework for mental health in the UK. He has been helping to run a voluntary mental health project in Bangladeshi villages on a visiting basis for the last 12 years.

Dr. Radford was previously employed with BHB between 1974 and 1985 as a consultant child and adult psychiatrist at the former St. Brendan’s. He also served as Medical Director and Advisor to the Minister of Health for five years during that period.

“It is a huge privilege to be working at MWI again,” said Dr. Radford. “My colleagues all want to do more for mental health services, which are moving to more community-based programmes”, said Dr. Radford. “Mental health professionals at MWI advocate the social inclusion of clients and support their personal autonomy, growth and responsibility.”

Dr. Simmons, a Bermudian, attended Warwick Academy before earning a Bachelor’s degree at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada and an MD from McGill University in Quebec. She then completed a psychiatry residency and an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.

Noting a greater continuity of patient care at MWI than in other jurisdictions, Dr. Simmons said, “In my previous practice settings, patients were typically followed by one clinical team while in the hospital and referred to an entirely different service upon discharge. At MWI, I look forward to collaborating with patients and treatment teams on a long-term basis.”

Dr. Simmons is also pleased to be home again. “I appreciate my training in diverse healthcare systems over the past 15 years. However, it´s great to be back in Bermuda – there´s certainly no place like home.”

“We welcome Dr. Simmons to the BHB team and are pleased to welcome back Dr. Radford,” said Patrice Dill, Chief Operating Officer for MWI. “These appointments play a vital role in our commitment to service excellence. We are very fortunate to have hired such qualified, skilled and experienced healthcare professionals. We are pleased, as well, to employ a Bermudian candidate with such extensive training.”
