Hospital Joins Global Campaign for World Water Day

Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) will join a global initiative marking World Water Day on 22 March. This campaign is intended to generate attention about the importance of water and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

“World Water Day is a day to think about the role water plays in giving life and restoring hope,” explains Debbie Jones, BHB Nurse Educator. “Water hydrates better than any other liquid. Without water our bodies would not work properly. Water makes up more than half of our body weight and is needed to help our blood carry oxygen to all of our cells. Water helps our bodies digest the food we eat and helps to get rid of waste from our bodies. We encourage members of the public to drink eight to ten glasses of water daily. Water is the best thing you can do for your body. It is precious and life saving, which is why we celebrate World Water Day.”

Benefits of drinking water include:
• Staying hydrated, which helps you think more clearly and also helps keep your memory sharp. When you are well hydrated you feel better and are more motivated.
• Keeping your mouth clean and your lips moist. When you are dehydrated your mouth and throat can feel dry-being dehydrated can cause bad breath.
• Helping your heart function more efficiently. When you are dehydrated, your heart has to work harder because of the lower blood volume. When people are dehydrated they complain of feeling exhausted when walking up stairs or doing anything strenuous.
• Releasing heat from your body, especially during and after exercise. When you are dehydrated the blood vessels find it more difficult to widen and release heat and you stay hotter longer. It is really important to drink enough water during the hot summer months when you lose water from perspiration. It’s also important to make sure you drink enough water when exercising.
• Ridding the body more efficiently of waste and toxins. A well hydrated body performs much better than a dehydrated body.
• Contributing to the skin’s elasticity.
• Helping your kidneys perform well and remove wastes from your body.

BHB would like to acknowledge John Barritt and Son for kindly donating 120 bottles of water to the hospital which will be given away in the lobby on 22 March.
